"Archimedes and the Door of Science" bookmark

TO ANSWER:
"A famous scientist once said that he was able to see so far because he stood on the shoulders of giants" How does this apply to other areas? What do you think about it?
Look at Archimedes' accomplishments. Have you studied any of those? Are you grateful to him for discovering those things?
"the greatest ideal of the Greeks: self-restraint" Why would that be an ideal? Do you agree? Why (not)?
"By the time he started school, Archimedes was supposed to know how to think. Now he was given more things to think about it." Why is that important? Do you know how to think?
"Whatever they were studying, the students first became familiar with all the known facts about the subject. Then they all worked together to try and learn new things." Do we do that? Why is that system helpful?
The early men "had only their sharp powers of observation, their curiosity and great patience." Do you think that would be hard? Do you do this with anything?
"Archimedes considered his work with spheres and cylinders... to be the most important in his life?" Is this what you think of when you think of Archimedes? What is your most important work? How do you want to be remembered?


TO DO:
"Nobody was too busy to stop and answer questions Because... wondering was the beginning of thinking...." Take time to answer someone's question.
"...They didn't argue angrily with each other, and they listened as much as they talked--and that is a sensible way to argue." Apply this principle when you are discussing something. Seek to listen as well as to be heard.
"the greatest ideal of the Greeks: self-restraint" Make a goal to have self-control over a certain part of your life.

"A good mind needed a good body" Do something that hurts your body in a good way :)
"The Mediterranean was filled with pirates." Do a pirate-y something
Research the Alexandrian Lighthouse, the Archimedean Screw, one of the mentioned scientists, pi, the Greek calendars.
Study Euclid's elements.
"He thought the discovery so important that he wanted the figure on his tombstone" Design your tombstone.
Make a play/picture/poem about Archimedes death and show/present it.
